American Bocce Co // 2022 Covid Letter
We very much appreciate your support, loyalty, and trust in us to continue to provide a social community for you and your teammates. With the recent surge in Omicron we thought we’d take a quick moment to address some steps being taken from both ABC and the City of Chicago to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and still compete safely.
If you’re in a league in Chicago, you are required to show proof of vaccination. All of our host venues fall under the umbrella of locations requiring proof of vaccination. Most of you are well aware of Chicago’s upcoming vaccine mandate by now, but in case you haven’t seen it directly from the source, here it is. The city’s official statement is as follows: “to help stop the spread of COVID-19, the City of Chicago has issued Public Health Order 2021–2, which requires certain establishments (as of January 3, 2022) to verify that patrons are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The Public Health Order will remain in effect until the City of Chicago is through this Omicron-driven surge and the risk of overwhelming hospital capacity has passed.” This means that if you haven’t already, snap a photo of your vaccine card and keep it stored on your phone — we can’t guarantee that all host venues will act in the same manner, but the expectation is to be ready to show proof each week.
We ask that all players keep their masks up while on or near the courts this season. How does that work with a drink in hand? Pretty easily. Keep your mask on, pull it down only to take sips, and push it back up when not actively drinking.
Relaxed Rules on Subs and Incomplete Teams
Our rules and regulations for both subs and complete teams have always been guided by a balance of fairness, integrity, and avoiding forfeit at all costs. With that said, for the upcoming season, and ensuing seasons during which COVID-19 is surging, we are relaxing our rules a bit. In the event that you or your teammates feel any symptoms of COVID-19 or test positive for COVID, you can relax knowing that if a team member can’t play on a league night, your team won’t be penalized for being a player down. That means:
- If a team is incomplete (2–3 players) and cannot find subs, we will allow that team to play without penalty during regular season games.
- If an incomplete team elects to pull a sub within the league, they will be allowed to do so during regular season games.
We feel like a more relaxed approach to subs / incomplete teams during the time being will allow for safe and fluid decision making while still prioritizing that games are not canceled.
In each leagues’ weekly campaign we will dedicate a segment to internal COVID-19 reports. We will also communicate any messaging or updates from our host venues or city guidelines.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support. Happy New Years to you all and we look forward to seeing you on the bocce courts next month.
